The Marion County Historical Society, Inc. is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year; having been foundend in 1908 by noted educator & attorney, Bernard Lee Butcher. His interest in public education led to his appointment to the Board of Regents of the State Normal Schools in 1877 and his election in 1880 as State Superintendent of Schools.  Bernard Lee ButcherHe did much during his years as State Superintendent to further the cause of better education for the public, re-established the School Journal, and obtained legislation which provided for the education of Black teachers, and established Arbor Day in WV (The first state east of the Mississippi to have an official Arbor Day).

Throughout his life he was seriously interested in history and genealogy. He was an early member of the State Historical Society.

The Society has published four hardback books, “The Marion County Centennial Year Book”, “Now & Long Ago” by Glenn D. Lough, “A History of Marion County (1985)” and “Marion County, a Pictorial History”.  Two of the more important projects of the Historical Society were the reconstruction of Prickett's Fort and the Marion County Historical Society's Museum.  One outstanding job was the Society's securing & financing of the log barns and cabins for use in the Pricketts Fort Reconstruction.

The Society now supervisors the operation of the Marion County Historical Society, Inc.'s Museum that is the former Marion County Sheriffs Home which is on the National Historic Landmarks registry.  Visit us at our 211 Adams Street, Fairmont, WV next to the Marion County Court House.

The Society sponsors many special events throughout the year, such as Founders’ Month, “Getting to Know You”, Julia Pierpont Day, WV’s Birthday, & the Holiday Historic House Tours. In addition, this year we sponsored the Fuzzy Knight Film Festival and an essay contest on African-Americans in Marion County who made a contribution for all students of Marion County. Watch for our upcoming events to celebrate our 100Th anniversary. The Society also has guest speakers available for the organizations and schools. We are also in partnership with the Folklife at FSU, Main Street, the Landmarks Commission, Convention & Speaker’s Bureau and the Cemetery Project.

Too often history is lost for the lack of funding. The Marion County Historical Society, Inc. has established a perpetual Endowment Fund with the Community Endowment Fund at WesBanc to prevent this. In honor of our 100th Anniversary, three contributions were made last month totaling approximately $7000.00. Please consider making a tax deductible contribution to help preserve our heritage. For contributions over $25, your name will be placed on a donor tree. There are 4 levels. Contributions can be mailed to MCHS, Inc. Endowment Fund, WesBanco Trust Department, and 301 Adams Street, Fairmont, WV 26554.

Come join us and help promote the history of our County and State. We are always looking for volunteers and new members. Our Web site is: www.marionhistorical.org. or e-mail us at: marionhistorical@yahoo.com
